As Raleigh-Durham International Airport continues to grow and attract new air service, the Airport Authority is investing more than $2.5 billion over the next decade in capital improvements through its Transform RDU program. Transform RDU is designed to expand capacity, modernize facilities and enhance the airport
experience through four major projects:
New Runway 5L-23R: Greater Adventures
A new primary runway will carry more passengers and cargo to destinations around the world. The 10,639-foot runway will provide important economic opportunities for our region, as well as make room for the future addition of gates at Terminal 2.
Parking Expansion: Economy Parking with Eco-Friendly Features
The airport is adding 7,000 economy parking spaces, an on-site Customer Amenities Building, solar panels and EV chargers to its lot off Aviation Parkway and National Guard Drive. The project has been awarded Platinum Envision verification for its sustainable features, the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure’s
highest recognition.
Terminal 2 Expansion: Smoother Travel Days
Expanding Terminal 2 will help reduce wait times at the ticket counter, at the security checkpoint and at baggage claim. The project will also add space for international arrivals as RDU offers flights to more destinations than ever before.
John Brantley Boulevard Extension: Less Congestion, Less Stress
RDU’s main roadway will be widened and extended to improve traffic flow around the airport. Additional lanes will reduce delays and minimize bottlenecks, and a longer curbside will allow for quicker pick-ups and drop-offs at Terminal 2.
Providing excellent customer service remains a top priority for the Airport Authority during construction. RDU has been named a Top Five Large Airport in North America in a J.D. Power passenger satisfaction study for the fourth time in five years. The 2025 rankings reflect overall traveler satisfaction based on ease of
travel; terminal facilities; airport staff; level of trust in the airport; food, beverage and retail; and the experience passengers had on arrival and departure.
“RDU is entering a period of significant transformation. As our capital improvement program accelerates, travelers will begin to see and feel the impacts of construction that will ultimately elevate our facilities and deliver a world-class airport experience for our region.”
