Please join us in welcoming WCED’s newest project manager, Will Rice!
Tell us about your background? Where did you go to school, what did you study?
- I was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee where I also attended the University of Tennessee and received a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural & Resource Economics as well as a Bachelor of Art in Political Science.
What has your career looked like so far?
- When I graduated from the University of Tennessee in the spring of 2022, I returned to my family’s dairy operation in Sweetwater, TN for a couple of years, which I credit as helping me develop a strong work ethic. Prior to joining the WCED team, I was working with the Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development supporting three economically distressed counties as defined by the Appalachian Regional Commission in the Chattanooga area.
What first sparked your interest in economic development?
- I was exposed to economic development at a very young age because my mother worked in economic development all my life, so I had the opportunity to attend and assist in chamber events about the same time I learned to read and tie my shoes.
What do you like most about economic development?
- My favorite thing about economic development is the mission of the work. Even as a newcomer, I see all that Wake County and this region has to offer companies looking to locate or expand their operations, and our mission is to highlight those existing positives that differentiate Wake County to make it an even better place to work, live, & play in the future.
What are you looking forward to in your new role?
- I am most excited to have the opportunity to work in such a dynamic economic environment. This region has so much ongoing progress and innovation where I hope to not only apply my existing skillset, but also the chance develop as a professional through collaboration with the Wake County & Raleigh Chamber team in addition to other partners in driving economic development for Wake County.
What do you like to do in your free time?
- In my free time I love to attend sporting events, live music, and second-hand bookstores!
