City Lab released a list of Top Ten Metros with creative-in-traded employment. Raleigh was ranked #4 where creative-in-traded jobs make up 21.3% of employment. The leading center for creative-in-traded employment was Sane Jose. Creative-in-Traded refers to employees in creative occupations in traded industries. Traded industries are classified as those “that concentrate in particular regions but sell products or services across regions and countries.”
According to the Competitiveness review, that looked at creativity, clusters and the competitive advantage of cities, creative-in-traded employment is a key driver of both innovation and economic growth. It is positively associated with higher levels of innovation, higher levels of economic output per capita and higher wages.
“Moving forward, the competitiveness of cities will turn on their ability to employ more workers in creative and traded industries, and to transform their economies and workforces from routine to creative work.”
